Deliverance from the Bondage of Fear

In Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, there was no specific human, organizational, political or religious party that was acting as an opponent to his ministry. Perhaps Paul had come to discern the true enemy in opposition to his work. He identifies a very specific foe in this letter and shares the secret to defeating him in Ephesians 6:10-18. The adversary, Paul points out, is not flesh and blood, but the rulers, the authorities, the cosmic powers over this present darkness, and the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places. All of these forces are from Satan. It is not the man whom we war with, but the spirit behind the man. “[T]he demons, spirits, angels, principalities and powers are regarded as subordinate to Satan or the devil. They are his innumerable powers seen as organized into a single empire. They are manifestations of the devil’s power.”[1]

These powers that Paul speaks of attempt to discredit his message by sabotaging his character. “The sole objective was that by discrediting him they could ultimately discredit the gospel he had preached.”[2] In 2 Corinthians 10:10, Paul’s adversaries say that his letters are weighty and have power, but that his body is weak and his speech is contemptible. The weight and power of his letters comes from the Holy Spirit. The weakness of Paul’s body is of no consequence. Paul boasts in his weakness, because God’s power is perfected in it. When we are weak, Christ is strong, and by His blood the powers of darkness are overcome. There is only one name by which a person can be saved (Acts 4:12), and that name is Jesus Christ. To turn to any other name is to side with the devil. “There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Do not be deceived, evil will not drive out evil. Freedom is only found in Jesus Christ, “and whom the Son set free is free indeed” (John 8:36).

Paul’s answer to the problem of the powers and principalities; the instruments of the devil, is the blood of Christ. Paul gives instructions for how to stand. The battlefield is spiritual, so followers of Christ must put on the full armor of God. This armor is the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God. Followers should pray without ceasing and hide the word of God in their hearts. For those found outside of Christ, nothing will save you from the powers of darkness, but the blood of the Lamb. By giving your life to Christ, who “destroyed him who has the power of death, that is, the devil,” you meet a power stronger than the one that has previously enslaved you. Christ’s blood has purchased you, and marked you out as God’s property, too dangerous for Satan to tamper with.

As many as have trusted Christ have become untouchable for the powers of darkness. . . when Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross of Calvary, it became the great witness to Satan and his rebellious cohorts (the powers and principalities) that they have lost the battle. ~ M. Olusina Fape

Accept your freedom by accepting the Gospel truth. Reject the lies of Satan, for he has no power over the righteous. We are made righteous by the blood of Jesus. Amen.
